Dear Yuletide Writer,

First, thank you for signing up, and for choosing to read my letter, whether I'm your assigned recipient or you just like the look of one of my chosen fandoms and/or prompts! I enjoy a lot of things about this annual exchange, which is why I've stuck with it for over a decade now, and it couldn't happen without everybody who signs up and all the people who put in so much hard work to make it run as smoothly as possible, which is much appreciated.

I sincerely hope that I haven't prompted you with anything that you might find stressful or distasteful, and that you enjoy writing whatever request you decide to write for me as much as I enjoy writing for others, or more.

If you're not my assigned author, and you're looking for prompts you might like to write as treats - thank you for reading my post, and I hope you find inspiration, whether here or elsewhere!

In case you need to check anything, I'll be more than willing to answer any clarification queries forwarded to me.

My triggers, squicks, dislikes, likes, and prompts are all below. :) I really don't think it's my place to judge what other people may or may not want or like in their fiction, fanfiction and/or offline life, so I hope you won't feel anything in the following sections to be meant as criticism or implied criticism of anyone else's likes, dislikes or other interests - nothing here is meant that way. Any exceptions to the DNW list will be listed with the request in question.

Do Not Want / Triggers and Squicks

Please apply to all fandoms unless otherwise stated. If a character has a canon backstory including one of my DNWs, I don't ask you to rewrite history, just not to make it a focal point of the story, please, and to warn for it.

—References to weight and diet, specifically numbers, weight manipulation and/or eating-disordered behaviour. (Just talking about food, or cooking, is mostly fine.)
—Domestic violence & familial abuse
—Sexual and/or physical abuse
—Sexual intercourse with impaired or no consent
—Gore and/or body horror
—Forced/unwilling medication/medical treatment
—Incest (where the characters know they're being incestuous)
—Dubiously consensual or non-consensual kissing and/or groping
—BDSM and/or any kink not listed as OK in my likes list
—Rimming
—A/B/O fic, including heat and/or knotting
—Sex during pregnancy
—Sex where one or more participants are under 16 years old (my country's age of consent)
—Romantic relationships with an age difference of more than 3 years between characters younger than 21
—Character- and/or actor-bashing
—Horror, torture, or canon-atypical violence (including to animals)
—Non-canonical irreversible death of requested characters
—Non-consensual infidelity
—Ableist or otherwise discriminatory language (unless canonically appropriate)

Please warn where you can: trigger warnings allow me to read stories I might otherwise avoid just in case. I also tend to prefer to escape from physical pain in my reading material.

I celebrate Yule, but if holidays from other faiths work for your plot bunnies, that's okay.

Please note that I'm happy reading from any viewpoint or perspective - first-person, third, omniscient, shifting, anything. Any tense setting is fine, too. I have absolutely no distinct preference in such matters: it's all good!

———

Favourite Things:

—Alternate-action AU ("what if someone did something differently", rather than "what if they were born into a different situation entirely", for the most part. Canon divergence is also very welcome, though that's not something I'd usually consider as AU.

—Soulbonding

—Fix-its for unhappy endings

—Shifted focus from, or a different POV on, canon events.

—Time travel, loops, reliving events till the characters get it right... no need to go into the science, as I love time fantasy most, but you can if you like. I've a special fondness for narratives where one character is stuck in a loop and nobody else remembers, or where other folk begin to remember little bits over time, or big events.

—Gen, if it's comedic, or very plotty.

—In order of preference for pairings: femmeslash, het, the occasional slash pairing; QPP relationships are great too, and I also love poly, threesomes and moresomes, though preferably more romantic than sexual.

If you're writing for the Yuleporn challenge, which is fine, I have a preference for focus on XX-type chromosomal bodies, whatever the gender of the person in the body. I also like hair-pulling and semi-public sex tropes, and I'm OK with mild dom/sub dynamics, aftercare, mild bondage and/or mild bloodplay kink, but please try to avoid anything else.

Anything that falls under the TransTide, Queering the Canon, Three Turtle Doves, Chromatic Yuletide and/or the Yuleporn mini-challenges would all be more than welcome for any of my fandoms. Where MultiLingYule is concerned, I'd rather stick to English for my main gift, but I can read French, German and Spanish and I used to love creating conlang material, so any of those would also be welcomed, if you fancy going that route.

Fandom #1:
Agatha Christie's Marple (TV 2004): Nemesis

Canon: One television episode, 92 minutes long. It's S03E04 of the Geraldine McEwan adaptation, and is available on Britbox and Prime Video.

Characters: Any (nominated: Agnes Carson, Clotilde Merryweather, Georgina Barrow, Jane Marple, Jason Rafiel, Michael Rafiel, Verity Hunt)

Prompts:

What did Jane say to Mother Agnes, to persuade her to offer that temptation to Clotilde? How could/did she explain to Agnes that she believed her fellow nun to be a murderess? What did Agnes know or suspect, by then? Enough to consent, seemingly.

How does Michael cope with his father's last gift to him, arrangements to discover and reveal to him the fate of his darling Verity? What might have happened with them, had Jason survived beyond the end of the episode and enacted the rest through a living will of some sort?

How did Jason communicate the requisite information to Georgina? Did he create Daffodil Tours, maybe for the purpose of future investigations, or just give silent-partner funding to whomever "Mr Daffodil" might be? What does Georgina know? Evidently not everything Jane does. How much did Jason tell her? She was involved in Intelligence work during WW2. Is that how Jason knew about her skills and how to contact her? What does she think, in all this?

Was Verity as naïve as she seemed, or simply young and inexperienced? Did she ever worry about Clotilde and her intense attachment before her death? Did Clotilde kill her outright with that first blow we saw? It seems unlikely. How did Clotilde manage to hide her body so easily? St Elspeth's was hardly deserted when she was killed, and surely she couldn't guarantee nobody would go into the room where the body was disguised, even with her trying to take all the duties of palliative care for Ralph|Martin alone to mask her activities?

Fandom #2:
Indexing - Seanan McGuire

Canon: Two novels, Indexing (404 pages) and Indexing: Reflections (325 pages), both available in audiobook, ebook and print.

Characters: Henrietta 'Henry' Marchen, Sloane Winters, Demi Santos, Worldbuilding (Indexing)

Prompts:

Use whichever mix of the characters you like! Here are some potential prompts for any or all of them:

I'd like to see Henry perhaps realise that she may not be quite as cis/het/allo as she previously assumed herself to be. There are so many canonical hints toward that - especially with her refusing to look away while Sloane changes in the car - and she and Sloane have so much chemistry, I'd love to see them get together.

Sloane doesn't age, because her story is in a sort of frozen state. What might happen if Henry doesn't age either? There's no reason for Demi to pause at her canonical age, but she might slow down and stop when she's a little older, as the Piper still needs to be physically able to lead their summoning and play their instruments.

How would it be if these three had to live and work alongside each other and possibly a continually-changing line-up of colleagues for centuries? What might that do to their personal relationships, especially if it effectively ends up being just the three of them who stay the course? I'd like to see how the existing agency works around this and how it develops over time, and their interactions with those original-character colleagues, too, if you want to go with the worldbuilding tag. No solo whiteout wood visits though, please.

I picture Henry and Sloane in and out of a romantic relationship, especially if eternity ever gets boring, with Demi sighing impatiently over their inability to get themselves sorted out and sometimes deciding to step in as wingperson - and the two of them returning the emotional support favour by comforting Demi when Demi's abuela eventually passes.

(Inclusions related to Demi's cultural background, aspects of being a person of colour in the US, and/or the mental adjustments Sloane and Henry could really do with making, canonically, would be welcome, as would discussion of her cœliac disease.)

I'd prefer not to have centralised het 'ships for this fandom (this means no active Gerry/Sloane, please, though I'm OK with their past relationship being mentioned, as it's canon). Please also avoid including any gaslighting and/or emotional abuse that extends beyond what's canon-typical. My personal headcanon is that Demi's non-binary, as the Piper's gender is irrelevant to their story, so I'd be very happy to see that, if you feel like it.

I'm okay with setting AUs, too, if that's what you like, provided those are with the existing characters.

Fandom #3: Chalet School - Elinor M. Brent-Dyer

Canon: 52 novels and a couple of obscure short stories that are hard to find. The unabridged versions of the original books can be hard to dig up, but Girls Gone By Press have done some work on that. Only works authored by Elinor M. Brent-Dyer are canonical (this is a very unusual fandom, long story).

Characters: Worldbuilding (Chalet School)

Prompts:

I can accept canon-likely ableism or other forms of discrimination in this fandom, provided there are tags and warnings, and a not-unhappy ending for the marginalised character(s). I also fully understand that this prompt may lead to the inclusion of the physical pain I mentioned as generally wishing to avoid, but that's OK, provided you tag and warn.

You're also welcome to use original or nominated characters, just as you like - it's all fine by me! :) Any named individuals are just being used as canonical examples, not as requests (this needed clarification in a prior Yuletide).

In general, CS as a series, though there's a lot about it that I love and that is why I often request it, is often painfully heterocentric, cis and allo for my liking as an adult. It doesn't deal well with non-Christian religions or atheism, nor with chronic or incurable health problems, and most of those issues aren't addressed *ever* in much of the fanfiction written for the fandom. This is something I very much want to see explored, hence my listing the Worldbuilding tag as my only prerequisite.

All that being so, this has potential as a TransTide or QTC request, either of which would be welcome - a young adult agender or enby Jo, for example, being a character who is in such a position of influence over the course of the school, would make for a fantastically intriguing plot, and I have no qualms over shipping her/them, provided the pairing doesn't hit my DNWs.

If you prefer to focus on the disability aspect, I'd love to see how my requested characters handle that, especially if the school is now under a legal framework that means they can't just send a pupil away permanently or decide they can't take a person because of their impairments. I've often felt EBD dealt very poorly with this sort of situation, especially in light of her mentioning the San next door so much! Matey would surely have something to say about this, wouldn't she? (I'm assuming the person who created that tag intended Gwyneth Lloyd, the matron most often known as "Matey" in canon.)

It often feels as though EBD uses sudden life-threatening illnesses, injuries, or other major traumatic experiences as plot devices without ever bothering to focus on the likely long-term impacts, with rare exceptions - and don't even get me started on what essentially amounts to the forcible conversion of Naomi Elton from atheism to Christianity by way of a disability healing trope... that whole storyline made me so frustrated! Jo's repeated bouts of pleurisy and pneumonia should have had some long-term effect on her general health, or at least her lung function, too ... but they never seem to. I lost a cousin to rheumatic fever, so this bugs me more than most, and Jo's just one of many cases.

To see a more realistic approach to the recovery period and post-recovery stages of such serious illnesses, and/or to the mental well-being of the numerous girls who seem to get kidnapped throughout the series would be welcome, too.

In other words, most of this request is about finding fix-its for some of EBD's more egregious attitudes; dealer's choice, naturally.

I'm thinking more about futurefic, but added scenes to canon, or AUs (setting or alternate history) would be fine too, if you get bunnies for that. ^_^ Even a special separate branch of the school for chronically ill pupils, á la the Annexe, would be a great idea to explore, since they have fair potential reasons to segregate those students in the setting in question.

Fandom #4: The Haunting of Hill House - Shirley Jackson

Canon: 1 novella of 182 pages, widely available in most formats.

Characters: Eleanor Vance (Haunting of Hill House - Jackson), Theodora (Haunting of Hill House - Jackson)

Prompts:

I know this was published in 1959, but please skip, or censor, any overtly homophobic insults from sympathetic canon characters? Thanks.

I don't understand, have never really understood, why it is that Theodora ranges herself with Luke and Dr. Montague against Nell in those last few scenes. Surely she would understand the danger more than sheltered Eleanor? Why did she risk letting her drive off alone that way, knowing what had happened to previous residents who tried to drive away from that house? Knowing that Nell wasn't in full control of herself? How would things have changed if Theodora had put her foot down sooner, had sided with Nell about the dangers and chosen to try to take her away from the house, to get them both to safety? Might they have escaped? Where would they go?

Fandom #5: Russian Doll (TV 2019)

Canon: TV series with 2 seasons, 8 and 7 episodes respectively, 25 minutes or less in length.

Characters: Oatmeal (Russian Doll)

Prompts:

My DNW list may seem a bit odd when applied to a cat, but it's important for the background. No explicit onscreen sex for humans, please (and minimal for cats, if you feel you need to get Oatmeal a partner!).

I would just love to hear about Oatmeal's adventures and his life, from his own point of view! I adore that little cat, he reminds me very much of my own sweet ginger tabby boy Magnus, and he has such a delightful personality for a story that doesn't really revolve around the cat. What would it all be like if it did? Build the world around him if you want that, and I am OK with secondary appearances from other nominated characters.

Canon-typical material that may contradict my DNW list is OK provided it's not super explicit, and that you tag, with the exception that I want Oatmeal to live, and maybe to have somewhere nice to go at the times where he "disappears" and Nadia thinks he's dead. And no hurting the kittyboy, please.

(I've only seen episode 1 of season 2 so far, as I *love* S1 and I wasn't quite getting into S2 as much at the start… but I can binge the rest pretty sharpish, if you decide to go with this! ^_^)

Fandom #6: Voices After Midnight - Richard Peck

Canon: One novella of 181 pages, available in paperback and sometimes hardback from most used-book sellers.

Characters: Heidi (Voices After Midnight), Emily Dunlap

Prompts:

Please keep this one kink-free if you go there. (I'm OK with some kink, but this isn't a request where I'd want that.)

This request is basically "women being awesome" with optional femmeslash (not explicit unless the characters are aged up a little, please). You're welcome to include other characters if you like, but most of all I'd like the focus to be on how Heidi and Emily would get on together. Maybe Heidi gets her help when she gets trapped, or makes another trip back she's not expecting? Whatever it is, I've always wanted more of these two, as the fandom is basically non-existent. :)
